Workout At Home Blog Series – 11 Cardio Workouts

Cardio is an important element of your exercise regime and shouldn’t be ignored. Cardio can help you shed fat and improve your respiratory system and heart function so doing cardio several times a week will shape you up on the outside and the inside. There are a number of different things you can do from home to improve your cardio activity. You don’t need expensive CV machinery, here are our favourite home cardio exercises to shed fat, burn calories and look after you from the inside.

skipping rope exercisesSkipping

Skipping is often overlooked but is a super form of cardio you can do at home. Skipping improves your leg strength, stamina, co-ordination, balance, agility and many other things, which is why it’s at the top of our lists. Try skipping for 15 minutes 3 times a week and you will soon see the benefits. Ensure you have good cushioned trainers to prevent your feet getting sore.

Bodyweight intervals

Interval training using a combination of bodyweight exercises is an absolutely fantastic way to kick start your body into metabolic overdrive! – Not only do the body weight exercises themselves help develop your stabilisation muscles and help tone the body, when performed in an interval training format they also send your fitness levels skyrocketing. The interval effect forces the heart to work at a slow pace, followed by an intense pace – this works the heart within both the aerobic and anaerobic zones and develops all aspects of fitness. The combination of exercises is key – make sure you choose three or four movements including at least one upper body and one lower body exercise, with two plyometrics (explosive jumping movements.)

Mountain climbers

Excellent for increasing your core strength and endurance, mountain climber’s tae you to exhaustion, fast. Adopting a push up position, begin the movement by bringing the right knee to the chest and back to starting position.
Quickly alternate to the left leg and continue this movement for a timed period and lengthen this period the more often you do this cardio exercise.

lunge exercisesLunge jumps

Superb for the legs the lunge jumps not only improve your CV health, they are brilliant at sculpting the legs and making them stronger. Standing in the lunge position, jump upwards-switching legs mid air so you land on the other leg and repeat so you are constantly jumping between lunges. Repeat for a total of 10-15 times in total. This explosive movement will tire you out fast.

Pad work

All you need is a set of boxing gloves and pads, a good training partner and a positive attitude – this form of cardio is amazing for not only working your heart within both major zones, it also helps tone all aspects of the body due to the trunk and limb movement needed to help stabilise whilst throwing strikes. Throw in kicks and you have a potent all encompassing fitness session that leaves you feeling strong and firm – try it today!

Focus on 1 thing each day and try not to do multiple things in one day, this way you will work the whole body throughout the week.
